Dark Souls – Review

It’s hard to know exactly how to review a game like Dark Souls. As you are probably aware, Dark Souls is a punishingly difficult game (even more difficult than its predecessor, Demon’s Souls), and the majority of gamers will probably find it too frustrating to play. On that level, Dark Souls is hard to recommend to many gamers, and presumably deserves only a modest review score. However, if you’re the kind of gamer who relishes the opportunity to push your gaming skills to the limit, then Dark Souls is heartily recommended, and is almost without peer in its own world of dark, fantasy RPG. Most other reviews have discussed the insane difficulty of Dark Souls ad nauseum, so for this review I’ll just say this much: it’s by far the hardest and most unforgiving PlayStation 3 game I have ever played. Half Minute Hero – PSP Review

You’ve got 30 seconds to saving the world, yep I’m being serious. Like most traditional RPG games such as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, you are level grinding and heading on many adventures with a small party. You can actually save the world in 30 seconds instead of spending over 50 hours at once.

The main story isn’t that much important but the main plot is where an evil overlord wants to destroy the world. You’ll be playing as 4 characters which you choose who you want to play as first from Hero, Evil Lord, Princess or Knight. Whoever you play as first there are 30 quests overall and only have 30 seconds to complete each level. Read more

Child of Eden – Review

I’ve never actually played Rez back on the Playstation 2 since that it was hard to find a copy of it back then. Video game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi and his team at Q Entertainment made a game called Child of Eden for the Xbox 360 where you could use the Kinect system; a few months later it was released for the Playstation with a few changes taken in and out of the 360 version.

The main story is to save Project Lumi, which is near completion, from a virus attack. If it was finished, Project Lumi would reproduce a human personality in Eden so it’s up to you stop the virus from happening. Read more

Killzone 3 – Review

If you’ve played Killzone 2 back in 2009 you would say that it was great First-Person Shooter, with gorgeous landscapes and glowing lighting.Plus the E3 2005 trailer which almost everyone has seen online, you can see how far the series has come from the PlayStation 2 and then switching to the PlayStation 3.

The story isn’t that great to follow felt more like watching a bad TV Drama programme on TV. The game begins in medias res from the point of view of (presumably) two Helghast soldiers who have arrived at Stahl Arms Corporation, but this is the tutorial bit. But after that part takes place just after the events of Killzone 2 where Sev and Rico are stilling fighting the Helghast; and stopping the war. Read more

Final Fantasy II – PSP Review

Most Final Fantasy fans would most likely say that Final Fantasy II would be their least favourite game in the series, including me. It was first released back in 1988 in Japan for the NES and then finally released in English for the PS1 back in 2003 for the rest of the world along with Final Fantasy I. Just after it was released for the PS1, it has made its way to the GBA, PSP, and on iPhone a few years later.

The plot for Final Fantasy II begins as Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon are attacked by Palamecian soldiers and left for dead. Firion, Maria, and Guy are rescued by Princess Hilda, who has established a rebel base in the town of Altair after her kingdom of Fynn was invaded by the Emperor. You are pretty much finding and searching for ways on taking down the Emperor and pretty much trying to save the world. Read more

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Review

Let’s get this out the door right away to avoid any confusion: I am a big fan of the Deus Ex series. The original Deus Ex is one of my favourite games of all time and its sequel, Invisible War, is still a great game despite not being the follow-up that Deus Ex deserved. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the follow-up that the original Deus Ex deserves.

To put it bluntly, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the best games released this year – so far… (lest we should forget about Skyrim/Dark Souls/Uncharted 3/Arkham City et al). What’s so good about Human Revolution that earns it this accolade? It’s difficult to pin down any one aspect of the game that stands out, but in broad terms it is the sheer depth of game that underpins its success. Let’s take a look at a scenario from the game: Read more

L.A. Noire – Review

L.A. Noire is a crime thriller set in the late 1940s in Los Angeles. You take the role of Cole Phelps, a patrolman who has just returned from fighting as a Marine out in Japan and follow his journey through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department. What makes this title special though, is the introduction of MotionScan technology, a system of HD cameras which are used to directly relay an actor’s face into the game. But underneath all of that, does the game play well? Or is the MotionScan gimmick the only reason to buy the game?

Bayonetta – Review

At the time of release the PlayStation 3 version of Bayonetta was slated for being inferior to the Xbox 360 version, and it’s true that the PS3 version does have minor issues. However, the many of these issues were ironed out in a post-release patch that allows you to install the game for much faster load times, giving the PS3 version a bit of a boost.

The spiritual predecessor to Bayonetta was Devil May Cry; which is a hack and slash action game. The director of Bayonette, Hideki Kamiya, worked with Capcom to create some of the best games over the years such as Okami, Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe, but left Capcom and then worked with SEGA but working under Platinum games.

The main plot of Bayonette is set in the present day; a fat man called Enzo has joined up with Bayonetta, a witch who was revived twenty years ago from the bottom of a lake and has little or no memories of her past. When Enzo informs her of the possible whereabouts of the person that owns the “Right Eye”, one-half of a set known as the “Eyes of the World”, she sets out to find this person, hoping that it may help her regain her lost memories. Throughout the main story you discover more about Bayonetta’s past and memories on what happened to her. Read more

Gran Turismo 5 – Review

This review is for Gran Turismo 5 running at version 1.10 (patch officially released on 7th June 2011). We wanted to wait for the first few major patches to be released before reviewing the game.

Gran Turismo 5 is a behemoth of a game. Upon first loading the game, you are strongly encouraged to sit through a 6.5GB installation that can take anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour, depending on the volume and free space of your hard disk. You then need to patch it, which currently requires about 650MB of data to be downloaded and installed. Make no mistake, Gran Turismo 5 is a big beast. With all that data, surely Gran Turismo 5 is the most graphically detailed, content rich racing game ever made? In a word: mostly.

It is hard to escape just how much hype preceded the release of Gran Turismo 5. After being delayed for years longer than expected, Gran Turismo 5 was finally released back on November 24th 2010. For fans, the silver lining of the incredibly long development time was that the game would turn out perfect. It hasn’t. But it’s still one of the finest computer games of this generation. Read more

Catherine – Review

Catherine is one of those games that you’ll want to keep coming back to. Unlike many other games you may played, Catherine will really make you think about how you play the game. Throughout the game you play as Vincent Brooks, a man in his early 30s who spends most of his days toiling in the tech industry and his evenings getting blasted with his friends at a local bar. Vincent does have a girlfriend named Katherine (With a K), whom he has been seeing for over 7 years. Katherine, however, wants him to commit by taking more responsibility and finally getting married.

But one night while getting drinking alone he ends up meeting a young girl named Catherine (with a C) who seems to have a huge crush on Vincent: this is where the main plot story starts to kick-in. Vincent starts to have weird nightmares and there has been rumours that people can die in their sleep if they’re not too careful. Read more
