UK PSN Store Update – 1st September 2010

PSN StoreSome big hitters on the PSN Store this week, including Alien Breed: Impact, an HD remake of the classic Amiga top-down shooter Alien Breed.

For fans of PSOne Classics, one of the defining games of the original PlayStation era, Tomb Raider, finally gets to the PSN Store for non-PlayStation Plus subscribers. Also new for non-PS+ subscribers is the R.U.S.E. demo, which was originally released last week for PS+.

There’s also a whole bunch of DLC, including some free outfits for Red Dead Redemption in addition to the usual suspects. All in all a pretty good update this week, with enough to keep most gamers happy for a long while. Check out the full list below: Read more

Top 10 PS3 Games – 29th August 2010 (Amazon UK)

The top three of this week’s chart are exactly the same as last week, with FIFA 11 holding on to the top spot for the third week in a row. With some massive AAA games like Red Dead Redemption and God of War III being released this year, it’s easy to forget the impact that the FIFA series has on the charts, with FIFA games regularly hitting the top spot for several weeks at a time.

Formula 1 2010 continues to move up the chart one position at a time, this week getting up to number five, its highest position yet. Uncharted 2′s recent re-release as a Platinum Game helps keep the sales high enough to keep the game at number ten this week; if you’ve not played Uncharted 2, it’s well worth playing - especially for just £14.91.

Top 10 PS3 Games – 22nd August 2010 (Amazon UK)

This week’s Top 10 sees FIFA 11 holding on to the top spot, while, with its release just five days away, Mafia II creeps up one place to number two. Reviews for Mafia II are just started to come out and it looks like it’s going to be getting some good solid review scores, though expect some criticism for the linear nature of the game and the finicky cover system.

Gran Turismo 5 also revs up a few places to number three, as does Formula 1 2010 which is due for release in about a month. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 drops one place to number nine, but with the Ultimate Edition coming out in less than a fortnight, expect the original game to slowly drop out of the charts in favour of the new edition.

Assassin’s Creed II makes an unexpected re-entry into the Top 10 – presumably the outrageously good value price of just £14.99 has caused a bit of a sales spike – though again, watch out for the Complete Edition, which is only a few quid more for the original game plus all the DLC.

UK PSN Store Update – 18th August 2010

PSN StoreThis week’s PSN Store update gives us on hell of a PsOne Classic – the original Tomb Raider is finally here – but only if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber. This is probably the first decent reason for being a subscriber since the service launched. Unlike the Mafia II demo timed-exclusivity, Tomb Raider is available for a whole two weeks before its general release for non-subscribers, giving quite a head start. Whether it’s early for PlayStation Plus subscribers or delayed for everyone else we’ll leave up to you…

Aside from Tomb Raider, there is a large swathe of Gamescom 2010 trailers with footage of some pretty exciting games, including Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 2 and a whole load of Move games.

If ice-hockey is your thing then there’s a new demo of NHL 11, as well as Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. 2. There’s also a really cool Uncharted 2 dynamic theme that sees Drake dragging his bashed-up body through snowy mountains.

Not much else of note this week but with all those Gamescom videos you should plenty to feast your eyes on for a while – that and Tomb Raider for the PlayStation Plus subscribers! Read more

R.U.S.E. Preview

It was a long while ago when Ubisoft first announced R.U.S.E., a new strategy game meant to revolutionise the way we play real-time games on consoles, with the intention of releasing it at then back-end of 2009. Constant feedback from the community and from QA Testers meant that the release date has been pushed back time and time again. Now though, Ubisoft say they’ve hit a new milestone in development, meaning that they can finally announce a release date of 17h September 2010 in Europe. We’ve also been promised a big surprise in the near future, which the development team (Eugen Systems) will soon reveal.

Other than that though, what can we expect from this highly anticipated new game? PlayStation Future attempts to find out…

Amazon UK Top 10 PS3 Games – 15th August 2010

FIFA 11 Box ArtIt’s a bit of a mix around this week and FIFA 11 jumps right up to the top spot ahead of its 1st October release. Another high mover is Mafia II which, thanks to the release of a demo this week on PSN, has rocketed right up to number 3. With its release less than two weeks away, expect Mafia II to hang around the top ten for a while longer and, if early reviews are good enough, perhaps even take the top spot.

Formula 1 2010 continues its assault on the charts and moves up another place to number 9. When the last few Formula 1 games were released, F1 as a motorsport was having a bit of a hard time attracting viewers and reaching out to potential fans both old and new. Codemasters have struck it lucky this year as the release of their first ever offical Formula 1 game coincides with one of the most exciting F1 seasons for a long time – if the game is as good as early previews suggest, this could be hanging around the charts for a long time to come.

Pretty much everything else in the chart has just been shuffled around a bit, though it’s interesting to see that two editions of Gran Turismo 5 are still selling well enough to both make it into the Top 10 again this week, a good three months before their release in November.

Today on FirstPlay – 11th August 2010

FirstPlay 019It’s another exciting week of content for FirstPlay viewers, with previews of some of the most anticipated forthcoming PS3 games.

For Star Wars fans, there’s some lovely HD footage of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, which promises to iron out the minor flaws from its otherwise brilliant predecessor, and there’s even a free Force Unleashed II Theme in the downloads section. There’s also a preview of Medal of Honor’s multiplayer mode, though most fans have probably had chance to try out the beta by now.

In the screenshot gallery there’s a whole slew of images from F1 2010, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Call of Duty: Black Ops, as well as a look at how Red Dead Redemption’s online functionality holds up.

Finally, there’s ‘Gran Turismo 5 vs The Real World’ feature, which promises to find out which looks best out of the two. Apparently Gran Turismo 5 is the winner…

Amazon UK Top 10 PS3 Games – 8th August 2010

F1 2010 Box ArtAlthough the top two spots in this week’s Top 10 remain unchanged for about the fourth week in a row, jumping right up to number three is Gran Turismo 5, no doubt helped by the publicity this week for the Collector’s and Limited Edition versions, the full details of which have now been disclosed. Not only is the standard version sitting well at number three, the Collector’s Edition also makes its chart debut at number eight – no sign of the ultra special mega hyper limited version yet  however, though the £150 price tag may be what’s putting people off for some reason.

Another highly anticipated racer, Formula 1 2010 makes its chart debut at number ten this week thanks to a recent price cut to £36.99. With its release only about six weeks away, the pre-orders for F1 2010 should start stacking up now.

We’ve also got the ‘Game of the Year’ edition of the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum climbing up to number six this week thanks in part to a very welcome price cut to £17.97. At that price it’s well worth checking out, and even comes with a pair of 3D glasses which you can use to play in 3D without  having a special 3D TV.

Amazon UK Top 10 PS3 Games – 1st August 2010

Modern Warfare 2This week’s Top 10 PS3 games sees Modern Warfare 2 still holding onto the top spot, while Red Dead Redemption holds onto the number two spot for yet another week. Between them they must be racking up some series sales figures and will be earning a lot of money for their respective publishers.

God of War 3 has dropped out of the Top 10 entirely this week, while a recent price cut to £9.99 (now sadly up to £16.49) sees BioShock 2 jump back up to number 4. I never saw much point in buying BioShock 2 as it just looks so similar to the stunning original BioShock but at discount prices like £9.99 or even £16.49 it’s hard to say no.

Just Cause 2 also leaps back up to number five thanks to a price cut to £20 which, given the sheer scale and scope of the game, is incredible value for money. Also sneaking back into the Top 10 thanks to a price cut (to £13) is Dante’s Inferno, which is pretty reasonable fun for that price.

Finally, Gran Turismo 5 climbs up another place to number nine. I wonder how long it will take to get up to number one? We’ve got several months between now and the November release date so there’s plenty of time yet… Read more
