Has everyone heard that the bird is the word? Angry Birds that is. Angry Birds has been one of the most successful handheld games on the mobile market and has now made its way to the PlayStation 3 and PSP as a PlayStation minis title. There isn’t really a plot to the series itself but basically the whole game boils down to your getting revenge on on a bunch of green pigs for stealing your eggs as you attempt to retrieve them.
Gameplay: If you have played it on a smartphone or iPad, you’ll immediately notice that there aren’t any touch screen controls to fire your bird. Instead, you use the analog stick to aim how high or low you want to fire, and tap/press X to release your bird from slingshot. There are several different types of birds you’ll use throughout each of the levels, including a red bird, which is the basic and standard bird, blue birds which can separate into three birds if you tap X at any time, and also black birds which can explode and cause a lot of damage. There are also White birds which can drop egg bombs from above.
Each level starts with the number, type, and order of birds pre-determined. If all of the green pigs have been defeated before you use the last bird, you win the level and move onto the next. Each of the pigs you defeat you will earn points, and smashing up stuff can earn you points too. In completing each level, players receive one, two, or three stars, and you can re-attempt unlocked levels as many times as you wish, in order to successfully complete them or to earn additional points and/or stars.
Graphics and Sound: Graphics look pretty much identical to the mobile phone version, being pretty and colourful, which suits the game perfectly. However, there a few issues during gameplay where everything slows down making hard and frustrating to see if aimed and fired your bird correctly. It’s also the same when if you hit any objects or if they are all piled up it slows down and you’re wondering if you’ve got rid of the pigs or not.
There isn’t really much to say more about its graphics as they are so simple. The audio is also very similar to the mobile phone version. The bird sounds and the same music can be a little annoying after a long time, but you can mute the sound if you wish.
Overall: It might not be much better than any other version of Angry birds but the game still has a lot to offer for anyone who hasn’t played Angry Birds at all.
There are around 200 levels throughout the game and each of the levels will offer you an easy puzzle or a hard one, so there’s a lot to play through. It’s definitely one of the better PlayStation Minis games worth checking out, and only will take up 18MB on your PSP or PS3.
It may have a few problems but still has a lot to offer, especially for anyone who hasn’t played it on a mobile phone.
