Killzone 3 was playable at Eurogamer Expo 2010 in both standard and 3D varieties. While I’ve played Batman: Arkham Asylum in old school 3D (with the red/green lenses), Killzone 3 was my first taste of full-on Avatar-quality 3D gaming. My first thoughts were that I was very impressed with the layering of the graphics, though the game did display a very slight flicker like an old interlaced monitor. The colours were an almost 100% reproduction of the non-3D version, and generally it was very slick and fun to see.
In particular, when pulling up the gun for closer aim, the 3D effect really made it feel as close to reality as a computer game can get (without all that wacky Lawnmower Man stuff anyway). The only real downside to the 3D was that it made the game, in particular the aiming, very slightly more difficult than the normal version - though having only played the game for about 20 minutes, it could simply be that I needed to get used to the 3D effect.
The gameplay itself was very reminiscent of Killzone 2, only set in the snow, and with much more open areas and more destruction. I have played a lot of FPS games since way back to the original Wolfenstein 3D, and Killzone 2 didn’t impress me as much as many other games in the genre. I found the gameplay slightly repetitive, the levels too narrow, and I absolutely hated the infinitely respawning enemies. Killzone 3, from what I played, seems to improve on the problems of Killzone 3.
The jet-packs are a fun addition, the snow makes a very refreshing change from the dirty grey industrial design of the Killzone 2 and the larger maps are a definite improvement. If you are one of the people who loved Killzone 2, then you’ll find a lot to like about Killzone 3. The graphics are excellent too, and if you’re lucky enough to have a 3D TV then you’re definitely in for a treat. However, the bottom line is that if Killzone 2 didn’t do it for you then Killzone 3 probably won’t either.
It’s still early days for Killzone 3 and there’s a lot of time between now and February 2011 for improvements and tweaks. In particular, the much-hyped PlayStation Move support could turn out to be a really fun way to play and may even entice non-Killzone fans along to join the party. There will be plenty of videos and screenshots coming out in the next few weeks and months but if you want to see a quick glimpse of Killzone 3 from Eurogamer then we’ve got a short video for you below. Enjoy:
why do you make me cry with jelousy? next year, though, next year ¬.¬
Yeah next year mate, you’ll love it!
I might go to E3 just to spite you and ben.
I think E3 would be a little more expensive than Eurogamer, plus the flights and accommodation – unless you plan to go out to the states next year anyway?
Planning to anyway
let’s hope so
