At first glance Darksiders seems like your average ‘slash em up’ game, with a reasonable story line and relatively samey game play, which is really the extent of the game’s genre. Whereas an FPS or RPG can take the player through all manner of scenarios, a game that involves slashing your way through increasingly tough bad guys to a boss at the end can’t really be taken much further than that. However, after playing the game, you can see that the developers have really tried to increase the variety of challenges in the game, and this has really increased the game’s playability.
The graphics in Darksiders are right up there with some of the top games of this generation. The detail of each character really stand out and the developers really use this to their advantage, with some truly awesome looking demons full of detail. Another good thing about the graphics is the cut-scenes; cutting tso a widescreen shot while still using the excellent in-game graphics engine really helps keep the cut-scenes feel like part of the game.
The environmental interaction of the game is very well designed, this is another great detail which singles the game out from the stereotypical hack ‘em and slash ‘em games. For example, almost every object wieldable as a weapon and the collection of tokens which you can exchange for upgrades on armour and weapons helps add further variety.
The storyline is very good but very confusing; after the first few cut scenes, I found myself continuously skipping them through increasing boredom.
In truth, I really just want to get back to the hacking of demons and using my new found combos, which in a way is a testament to how fun the gameplay is.
The game is indeed very entertaining, but I would generally recommend renting it rather than buying it if you have the option, unless you’re a particular fan of the genre. Overall it is very fun, but unfortunately it lacks a lot of the replayability and addictiveness that the best games of this generation have.
