What We’ve Been Playing – July 2010 Edition

PlayStation Future Logo

Summer is now in full swing and the absence of new games is still fairly unnoticeable as the pile of the “To Play…” games slowly dwindles. Not to worry though, in a few months another mammoth wave of games and hardware will hit the PlayStation franchise with tonnes of new games like LittleBigPlanet 2, Heroes On The Move, Gran Turismo 5 and many more. Then there’s PlayStation Move in its entirety with many games getting a move update – Heavy Rain included.

For now though, it seems the team has been busy with a variety of games. Let’s take a look, shall we?

GTA V To Be Set In Las Vegas?

So it has started, GTA V is inevitably on its way and so the rumours have begun emerging. The first one is a biggie: the location: Las Vegas it is.

VG24/7 is the one responsible for this rumour. Would an upgraded San Andreas be nice? Also on the agenda was the game’s announcement: apparently coming very shortly, within the next few months. Reports say it could coincide with the first public airing of Rockstar’s other hit title, Max Payne 3.

SPOILER ALERT! The GTA IV saga certainly got us something to expect, possibly, in the next title, with the ending of the Ballad of Gay Tony, the final DLC package and final in the GTA IV saga, showed main GTA IV character Patrick McReary leaving Liberty City- could he be travelling to the next location?

As always, PlayStation Future is the place to be for GTA V news.

ArcaniA: Gothic 4 – New Screenshots

We’ve got a handful of brand new screenshots from upcoming RPG adventure ArcaniA: Gothic 4, showing a small selection of the wildlife and enemies that players will encounter on their journey to free the people of Myrtana through the game.

The game’s predecessor, Gothic 3, was an excellent PC RPG let down by annoying bugs and high system requirements for fairly unspectacular visuals. Assuming those problems are ironed out, and judging from the screenshots released so far, it looks like Gothic 4 is shaping up beautifully and we could be in for a treat when it’s finally released in October this year.

SOCOM 4 Delayed

For those anticipating PlayStation Move and SOCOM 4, be warned: the game has been delayed to 2011.

Sony broke the news today in a statement, a rather disappointing one at that. SOCOM 4 was looking to be one of the PlayStation Move’s big 2010 launch titles.

“We can confirm that SOCOM 4 will be released in 2011. The team is focusing on additional features which will help to deliver the most compelling and immersive SOCOM experience yet. Please look out for further updates and announcements over the coming months.”

So, the most compelling and immersive SOCOM experience yet, right? With PlayStation Move also there, the game is looking to be a cracker. What will these additional features be then Sony?

F1 2010 Preview

F1 2010 Box ArtFormula 1 is a sport that has a massive fan base: in other words, it’s worldwide. There is something about Formula 1 that, however boring some races may be, keeps the fans happy. Maybe it’s the controversy, the cars, the locations or the drivers. Or the spectacular crashes you see once in a while. Whatever appeals to you, though, there’s one game that will have everything that Formula 1 is.

F1 2010 is the game, in Codemasters’ hands after Sony’s exclusive F1 Championship Edition (based on the 2006 season) was released before the developer, Studio Liverpool, lost the license. Being Codemasters’ first Formula 1 game, the Birmingham studio has been hard at work since acquiring the license in May 2008. Last year Sumo Digital (published by Codemasters) released F1 2009 on the PSP, and was a decent success after the disappointment that the Birmingham studio weren’t releasing a 2009 game: instead focusing all of their attention to 2010. UK PSN Store Update – 28th July 2010

Earthworm Jim HD

The big news on the PSN Store this week is the release on Earthworm Jim HD, a new hi-definition remake of the classic Earthworm Jim game. Also new this week is the first full PS3 football manager game, Premier Manager.

It’s good to see a couple of new PSone titles on the store, even if one of them is Pong (the other being Rayman 2). There are also add-on packs for Super Street Fighter IV, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 and Transformers: War for Cybertron, as well as a few other bits and pieces of DLC and a ‘Bamboo Forest’ Dynamic Theme for you to feast your eyes on.

Today on FirstPlay – 28th July

FirstPlay Episode 17Here on FirstPlay is another pretty good episode to get your hands on, first of is a preview of stabby-stabby Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, then there’s a preview of what’s to come in 3D for the PS3 – complete with an interview with the head of Sony UK. There’s also another review round-up (which proved quite popular in older episodes) including Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, and Toy Story 3. Lastly in the HD section is a review of the new movie thriller, Exam.

It has to be said that in the Screenshots section, the only game I’ve really heard of is the (hopefully) brilliant sequel to a brilliant game, inFamous 2. Then there’s the new RPG, Lord of the Rings: War in the North, and NeverDead as well as HomeFront.

SDCC 2010: LittleBigPlanet 2 Dated!

LittleBigPlanet 2 Box ArtYep… that’s right, LittleBigPlanet 2 has a release date!

Following the announcement of the game earlier this year, LittleBigPlanet 2 was given a release date at this year’s San Diego Comic Con: 16th November 2010 is the big day. In America, that is.

We’re not yet sure of a European date, or whether we’ll get the pre-order offers and Special Edition that have been announced in America. We’ll post an update when news comes in.

Earthworm Jim HD Releases On PSN Tomorrow

Earthworm Jim will probably be lost on many younger gamers, but anyone who’s played a 16-bit game on a 16-bit console will probably know of this quirky title. For those of you that don’t know what Earthworm Jim is all about, it’s a run and gun platformer. You are an earthworm called Jim, trying to take on the forces of evil with nothing but a robotic suit and a pistol.

This HD remake of the original title will feature all of the levels included in the original game (released on Sega MegaDrive) which means lots of shooting cows, and using your head as a whip. On top of that, you can play with your friends via local or online 2-4 player co-op, on a choice of 15 multiplayer maps.

PS3 System Software 3.41 Released

Sony has released a minor update to the PS3′s System Software. You will be prompted to install this update when you try to sign in to the PSN, if you don’t have an internet connection on your PS3, chances are that this update will be pretty wasted on you, but here’s a link to the download for any readers in the EU Region – PS3 V3.41.

As for what the update actually consists of, it seems very little in the way of noticeable changes. You are now able to recommend games and items for other people, this will appear in a new “You May Like…” section on the PlayStation Store and although not live yet, it will be available by the end of the month. The only other feature confirmed at present is the ability to use automatic funding for your PlayStation Plus subscription in the Account Management area.
