This week’s FirstPlay episode has a wide range of information that includes a PSP Comics rundown and a Blu-ray review, and the two gane reviews included are both quite niche games – perhaps FirstPlay have been running a bit ligher on ideas this week, or more optimistically perhaps they are trying to broaden our horizons!
Demon’s Souls is given a very interesting review, showing some of the multiple deaths that most players will have to endure in the game, as well as explaining some of the more unusual (but nonetheless clever) mechanics of the game. With Demon’s Souls finally getting a UK release this Friday, it’s sensible timing on FirstPlay’s part to get a review in now – hopefully this trend will continue rather than slip back to the post-release reviews we’ve often seen recently.
As an American Football game, Backbreaker will be of little interest to many British gamers and the review does little to justify purchase – the graphics looks bland and unless you’re a fan of American Football it would be hard to get excited about this. The ‘over the shoulders’ view does provide an interesting twist on the sports genre however, and makes the game look more involving than the usual FIFA style ‘stadium cam’.
The Blu-ray review of Book of Eli, although not really gaming related, is still worth viewing – though I’m not convinced by their 8/10 score!
The preview of Majin & The Forsaken Kingdom is worth a look, though it does look a lot like Prince of Persia at the moment. The preview is fairly light on information, which is understandable at this early stage, though the game looks pretty and the gameplay could be fun if you’re into puzzle/platformer games.
The PSN Racer round-up is a nice little feature, though it has at least one striking omission – namely, Burnout Paradise, which is easily one of the best racers on the PSN. That said, what is shown looks good and it’s nice to see a niche game like PixelJunk Racers get some screentime.
This week’s featured downloads include the demo of Backbreaker that was first revealed last week, and a static Assassin’s Creed II Theme which is nothing to get excited about.
Overall the two stand-out features this week are the PSN Racer round-up and the Demon’s Souls review. Outside of those there’s little else for most gamers – let’s hope next week picks up the pace again.
