So, Criterion have finally revealed the game that they have been working on for the best part of a year now, we all knew it was Need For Speed, but we didn’t have a clue about the gameplay. Yesterday, at EA’s E3 Press Conference, we finally got a look at the uncertain future of the series.

It turns out that Criterion have tried to take the game back to its roots, right when it was first released on 3DO. What they appear to be saying is that this one will be open world again, with (like the name suggests) pursuits from cops taking centre stage. Don’t think you can just be the bad guys though, if you want to be a cop, then by all means go for it and take down those robbers!

Licensed cars such as the Bugatti Veyron (not pictured) will be featured in the game.

Another addition in this instalment of the series are the licensed cars. The trailer below shows off some of the best supercars in the world including (but not limited to) the Bugatti Veyron, the Koenigsegg CCX and the Pagani Zonda Cinque. Although according to Criterion, they won’t be in pristine condition for long…

Back to the pursuit mode now, where the cops will be given various weapons to combat the bad guys. Obviously, as the pursuit heightens in scale, so do the weapons available at your disposal. What starts off as a simple Road Block to use can end up with a full scale helicopter attack (all shown in the trailer below), which on the receiving end of things can’t be good.

With Road Blocks just a tiny portion of your arsenal, it seems the cops' job will be an exciting one to say the least.

Now, if you’ll all cast your minds back to Criterion’s last project: Burnout Paradise. Remember the online and how integrated the experience was? Criterion aim to do that again – by making everything you can do in the single player portion of the game available online. You’ll be able to compare your stats and performance with your friends as well as upload pictures and receive updates from the developers using the Autolog facility, described as a ‘Facebook for the game’.

Interested in a release date are we? Well, there’s not that long to wait really. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit will be released on 18th November in Mainland Europe and 19th November in the UK for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, I have the trailer just below which I’ve mentioned in the text.
